Philos

Veronica Ulmer
Philo Advisor

Since its inception, Sigma Gamma Rho has promoted unity among women and for years many alumnae chapters worked with individuals who were not members of Greek-lettered organizations. These women were organized into auxiliaries that had various names until 1954 when the sorority officially approved the organized affiliate group and accepted the name of "Philo"(meaning Friend) as their official name.
In 1980, the Philos were organized on a national level and have grown to represent hundreds of women organized on a regional level as well. The Philos have contributed countless hours of community service and thousands of dollars to aid Sigma Gamma Rho's aim to enhance the quality of life within every community.
The Philo Affiliates are friends of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. In 1943 the Galveston-Houston area of Philos began in Galveston, TX. The Gamma Phi Sigma Philos were founded in 1972 and Philo Sallie Williams from the Gamma Phi Sigma Chapter was elected President of the Southwestern Region from 1974-1980.
Philo Monica Simon became the Philo President of the Gamma Phi Sigma Philos, an affiliate of Sigma Gamma Sorority Inc in 2014. Mrs. Sheryl Norton was appointed as Philo Advisor. Five (5) other Philos were recruited and were inducted in September 2015. Those inaugural Philos were Philo Athena Reed, Philo Felicia Carter, Philo Roslin Gibbs, Philo Linda Bratcher, and Philo Alicia Brown. Our numbers swelled to 19 active Philos in 2017. During those years, we became the award-winning Gamma Phi Sigma Philos. We were awarded the regional Philo affiliate of the Year and could boast the winners of both the regional President's Gala and First Lady Pageants. Gamma Phi Sigma Philos commitment to Community Service and Civic Involvement led us to go beyond our participation with the sorority's National Initiatives. The GPS Philos developed their own community efforts: Wreath Across America fundraiser, Homebuyer Education Seminar, Voter Registration, and Education Seminar, Cleanup at the Houston Food Bank, Women Empowerment & Wellness Seminar, NAMI Mental Health Awareness Walk, Mental Health Wellness Seminar, Nursing home visitation, various other community projects. Gamma Phi Sigma Philos has maintained our presence in the community at large.
